Explore high-end and top restaurants within your budget during the Restaurant Week

This year Dining City Nederland organised the Nationale Restaurant Week for the 20th time. During the Restaurant Week you can visit different high-end and top restaurant and enjoy a three course meal for a fixed price of €27,50. What you get is decided by the restaurant, but it gives you an impression what dishes they normally serve in their restaurant.

The latest Restaurant Week was from the 28th of March till the 14th of April and I visited three restaurants during that time. Are you curious about the dishes I got to try? Read more about them below.

The first restaurant I visited was Publique in The Hague. This restaurant has a chic interior and their food is mainly influenced by the French and Italian kitchen with an international twist. They are open for lunch and dinner.

They prepared us a three course meal, but we could also choose for additional dishes. When the dishes were presented it was a true feast for the eye. It was beautifully displayed and had a unique mix of flavours.

We started with an appetizer of Whiting with Dutch shrimps, little Gem, Yuzu and green asparagus.

The main course was Lomo Joselito with pork belly, potato, asparagus and herbs.

As dessert we had tonkabonen hangop with a mixture of red fruits, crumble and dragon herb.

At a first glance at the dishes, one might think it’s not a lot, but actually it was quite filling, especially the main course. Publique has an open kitchen and from the counter you could watch how the chefs prepared all the dishes. I really love the mixture of flavours and would love to come here again to try some more!

The second restaurant I visited was O’Pazzo. This is an Italian restaurant in the center of Rotterdam. The name means ‘crazy’ and you can enjoy the finest of the Italian kitchen here. Whether you come for a fancy dish, a pizza or just for a cup of coffee, everything is possible. Fortunately, they also sell some of their products, like olive oil, pesto or grappa.

When we entered the restaurant we saw that the restaurant was divided in two parts. One side is for the people who only come for a quick bite or some coffee while the other side is for the fancy dinners. We sat at the fancy dinner part and also here they prepared us a three dinner course which they’ve composed for the Restaurant Week. They also offered an extra dish, which we took.

We first started with an amuse with squid and seaweed and different pieces of vegetables.

As appetizer we got carpaccio of swordfish with blueberries.

The extra dish was pork belly with peas and pea sauce.

The main course was guinea fowl with green peppers.

And as dessert we got a platter with mango fruit and ice-cream and a triple-chocolate cake.

The dishes were again very surprising and again I loved the mixture of flavours. Previously, I only know the Italian kitchen for its pasta and pizza. This is a nice introduction for me of what the Italian kitchen has to offer more.

Restaurant Allard

The last restaurant I visited during the Restaurant Week was Allard in The Hague. This restaurant is located in one of the old buildings in the city center and is owned by Allard van der Heijde. You can tell he is passionate about his restaurant as you’ll see him walking around in the restaurant where he greets you and has a small talk with you.

Together with his team he serves the best dishes from the French kitchen and mixes it with other cuisines. Allard works with local products, like fish is from the fish market in Scheveningen, the meat is from the local butcher of The Hague and the vegetables are from the whole Westland region.

The interior is really cozy and fancy. It made me feel as if I walked into a chic and cozy living room with everywhere an own corner to sit down. We got a table in the corner and Allard offered a variety in the three course meal. With the appetizer and main course you could choose different dishes consisting of seafood or meat. These dishes could also be ordered separately as an extra course.

Here we also got an amuse. This time it was a fried duck meat ball.

As an appetizer I choose tartar with quail egg, while my friend chose a dish with scallop.

As main course we could choose between fish or meat. We both chose the meat dish, which was braised calf’s cheek with asparagus and fried parsnip.

As dessert we got a cheese platter with different kind of cheese and figs jam.

Again this was a wonderful experience. Tartar with quail eggs and calf’s cheek are dishes that I rarely eat. So it was great chance to be able to try them out.
